Vancouver Christian School
Why Teach at Vancouver Christian School?
Established in 1949, Vancouver Christian School is a K-12, learning-inclusive community. Our mission is to prepare students for a life of transformation and service through excellent, Christ-centred education. A member of the Federation of Independent Schools (FISA) of BC, as well as of the Society of Christian Schools of BC (SCSBC), the Vancouver Christian School meets and exceeds the high standards set by the BC Ministry of Education for curriculum, school evaluations and teacher certification. Our school currently serves more than 800 students, with a staff of over 120. We are pleased to offer three divisions at VCS: elementary school (K-5), middle school (Grades 6-8) and high school (Grades 9-12). Our Mission, Vision and Values More than ever, our students need grounding that will carry them through the rest of their lives. At VCS, we want our students to see the world through God’s eyes, growing and strengthening their gifts so that can use them to serve Him and others as Justice Seekers, Beauty Creators, Community Cultivators, Earth Keepers and World Healers. VCS staff intentionally consider a Christian perspective and our Mission Statement as they prepare program and curriculum and carry out yearly themes and chapels, all while fostering relationships with parents, students and the community beyond. VCS staff see students as image bearers, created by God as social, intellectual, physical and spiritual beings. All of it matters! VCS has a strong tradition of creating a nurturing and welcoming environment where students are known and loved for who they are, and encouraged to persevere and grow. Our goal is to know, follow and support all students – from kindergarten to Grade 12 – building on their strengths and addressing their needs. We wisely and carefully integrate technology across the classroom and throughout the school. The new VCS building includes spaces for collaborative study and our library learning commons is a hub for invention, creativity and project work. We are committed to building solid foundational skills and will continue to meld proven traditional methodology with innovation and progress. Draw for Employees VCS provides the best possible working environment for staff and works hard to build a sense of community. Prayer, communal worship, celebrating, collaborating and supporting each other through difficult times are all part of a healthy culture. Why You'll Love it Here Here’s what our staff have to say about working at VCS:
The School Community VCS is a warm, welcoming community of parents, staff and students. For 70 years, we have served Christian families in the city of Vancouver, bringing faith and learning together for those students born into a strong Christian tradition and for those new to our city and/or new to faith. At VCS, we strive to build strong connections with our neighbourhood, our city and its churches, and with the global faith community, through teaching, prayer and service. VCS student, staff and parent communities all reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of the metro Vancouver area. Many students and staff speak more than one language at home, and VCS offers instruction in French from Grade 2 and in Mandarin and Spanish in the senior grades. Our Unique Programs As a learning inclusive school, VCS seeks to serve and meet the needs of our diverse community of students. Learning support and assistance are integrated into programs at all grade levels by our Educational Support Services team. In addition, VCS offers:
After-school clubs, led by both teachers and local experts, are important additions to student life. Some, like Destination Imagination, choir and chess, connect students with other schools and/or the larger community. Other shorter-term workshops, like engineering, yearbook or the ecology club, to name a few, are coordinated within the school by VCS teachers and staff. The Local Area Vancouver is a naturally beautiful city, and our students and staff take full advantage of the many outdoor activities available year-round. Temperate weather and good public transport also make it easy to participate in any of the many multicultural events hosted throughout the city, and to sample the variety of different cuisines available. For those looking to further their education, Vancouver is also home to several world-renowned post-secondary institutions, including the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Regent Theological College. A Supportive Spiritual Community Our spiritual community is made up of members of over 70 churches across the metro Vancouver area, representing many denominations and traditions. For more than 30 years, VCS has actively engaged with churches and church leaders, through Pastors Day events, church visits, and by supporting local and worldwide missions through our staff and parent connections. |
